Janusz KORCZAK The legendary
Polish-Jewish doctor, educator, and writer, he devoted his life to work for the
benefit of orphans. He was well-known as the Old Doctor on the Warsaw Radio for
his innovative programs for children and their parents, and he was loved as the
author of children’s books and pedagogical works.
After Nazi Germany conquered Poland, Doctor Korczak with his orphanage was trapped in the walls of the Warsaw
Ghetto. Although friends offered Korczak asylum and were able to arrange his
escape, Korczak refused and stayed with the children to the end…
The play “Children’s Republic” is based
on:
• Korczak’s life and ideas, his “Ghetto
Diary,” the books "How to Love a Child," "The Child's Right to Respect," and
other works, which have inspired several generations of parents and educators;
• Excerpts from “King Matt The First” – a
masterpiece of children’s literature
• Stories about Korczak and his orphanage
in Warsaw before and during World War II
